Meg

Meet Meg from Wellington, New Zealand! Meg has loved textiles and fibre since she was tiny. Now, she spends her days making beautiful things for people who also make beautiful things.

What are your favorites right now?
Yarn Store: It has to be Holland Road Yarn Company here in Wellington. Not only do they have an incredible range of local and international yarns, but they also sell the things I make for my little business, Rose Marlow. I travel abroad a lot and I always make sure to explore the yarn stores wherever I am. One of my all-time favorites is A Verb for Keeping Warm in Oakland, California. I’m going to be in Japan again soon, so the Walnut stores in Tokyo and Kyoto are at the very top of my list of places to visit.

Yarn: I love New Zealand yarns for their quality and variety, and I love using yarns that have been hand-dyed by the many talented local yarn dyers. Spinning Gay Yarn, Dark Harbour Yarn and Fibre Artemis are special favorites.

Why do you knit? I have made something every day ever since I was a child. I find knitting especially rewarding because it’s magical that I can turn string into clothing by just using some sticks and my wits! I also love being part of the community – I feel lucky to have met so many incredible people through knitting.

Most challenging project (and why)? Recently a customer called on a Tuesday evening asking me to make a woman’s sweater by Friday morning. On Wednesday morning I picked up the yarn, drafted the pattern, and started knitting that afternoon. On Friday morning I seamed the pieces, steam-blocked the sweater, and delivered it to him 10 minutes before the deadline. It was the most testing and most rewarding project I have ever done.

What’s your new favorite thing? My new favorite thing is not exactly new – it’s the spinning wheel I inherited from my grandmother in January. I find spinning calms my mind and makes me slow right down. It’s also a nice way to remember my Nana who was the one who taught me spinning, weaving and knitting (and so much more!)
