Meet Lilia! Peruvian girl traveling around the world with her needles and crochet hooks. Currently living in Venice, Italy, dedicated to knitting, crochet, yarn and crafts.
What are your favorites right now?
Yarn Store: I love yarn from my country, and Michell Alpaca in Lima is the best place to buy yarn.
Yarn: Peruvian alpaca is the best, especially if it’s hand dyed naturally. The colors are the most unique in the world!
Why do you knit? My grandmother taught me to knit when I was seven years old. Like every person, I have my story: happiness, sadness, difficult moments, dramatic moments, but knitting and crocheting were there to save me. They give me the enthusiasm and happiness that you can only get if you feed your soul correctly. I lived in Miami Florida for 10 years, then moved to Venice, Italy with my husband, and made sure I always had my needles and hooks!
Most challenging project (and why)? Oh, definitely brioche stitch! I learned brioche in South America when I was 13 years old, and we called it English stitch. Basic brioche is easy and beautiful to knit, but the hard part is two color. Two weeks ago I challenged myself with a design that I’m still working on, and now I can do it with my eyes closed! I’m so happy for that. Always learn; learn everything in life! I once said to my husband, “How can anyone say they’re bored when there are millions of things to learn?”
What’s your new favorite thing? My husband is a woodwork artist and he made me a wooden crochet hook. It’s more than that, it’s a piece of art. I feel like I’m crocheting with a feather, and it makes my stitches so beautiful and unique. I absolutely love it!
Little something extra: I’ll be launching my natural hand dyed yarn using herbs and flowers from the Italian forest and mountains. I began my journey hand dying yarn ecologically in Italy, and I plan to take this adventure to my own country, Perú, using herbs and flowers from the Andes. I will be open to trading my yarn with other fiber artists in the next couple of weeks, so if somebody is interested, just contact me (@liliacraftparty on Instagram or via my Etsy shop) and I will be happy to work with you.
